As a Writer/Producer at Newsy. I was one of two writers working on various Newsy hour long programs, chiefly the daily news shows The Why and Newsy Tonight. Being part of a skeleton crew for a large television network made me quick on my feet when it comes to breaking news and an effective writer under pressure. I also aided  programming by running camera for live shots in the Washington DC Bureau throughout the day as needed. 

2020 TOKYO OLYMPICS LIKELY TO BE POSTPONED 

There is a good chance the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics will become the 2021

Summer Olympics, according to a member of the International Olympic

Committee. 

For weeks there's been pressure building to cancel or postpone the games

The committee says it will make a final decision by the end of May

 

REPORTED CASES ITALY DROP FOR SECOND DAY IN A ROW

In Italy, Coronavirus cases have dropped for the second day in a row 

That's some good news.

Authorities report four thousand seven hundred and 89 new cases today. 

Seven hundred fewer than yesterday. 

The number of deaths is dropping as well, though not as drastically.

There were six hundred and 51 deaths on Sunday.

Six hundred today. 

 

SYRIA REPORTS COUNTRY’S FIRST CORONAVIRUS CASE

And Syria announced its first confirmed case of coronavirus Sunday came from a woman who traveled to Syria from an infected country 

Syria's uniquely unprepared for coronavirus.

The country has been at war for nine years.

Recent fighting that left at least 1 million people displaced. 

And hospitals were known to be common targets for attacks. 

 

U.S. AIRSTRIKE AFTER IRAQ BASE ATTACK

Tonight the U.S. launched an airstrike on an Iranian backed militia group. 

Officials believe the militia was responsible for a rocket attack that killed two Americans at a military base in Iraq yesterday. 

What you're seeing on screen right here is the rocket launcher attached to a truck that was used to carry out the attack. 

It was abandoned shortly thereafter.

Commander General Kenneth Mackenzie who oversees the troops in the Middle East

said today the attack crossed QUOTE “a red line."

The Secretary of Defense said these groups would be held responsible.

 

JUDGE ORDERS MANNING OUT OF PRISON 

And the woman responsible for leaking thousands of government documents, 

Chelsea Manning, is being released from jail 

A federal judge sent out the order today in Virginia. 

Manning had her sentence commuted by President Obama but returned to prison after refusing to testify regarding WikiLeaks. 

The judge says her testimony is no longer necessary. 

 

VENEZUELA ARRESTS OIL EXECUTIVES

Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guiadó, recognized by the U.S. as the president of

that country, met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today as he continues his

tour of Washington. 

SOT PELOSI: “We believe that the plight of the people of Venezuela is a challenge to the conscience of the world and we will all stay with you Mr. President in that fight”

 

Speaker Pelosi went on to talk about freeing oil executives held in Venezuela since 2017.

We now know that hours after Guaidó's White House visit with President Trump yesterday, Venezuelan police arrested six US oil executives who had been under house arrest. 

They're in police custody now.

The six men all worked for CITGO and most are naturalized US citizens 

 

TALIBAN KIDNAPS U.S. CONTRACTOR

And we’re following the story of a US citizen captured in Afghanistan.

The 57 year old contractor was kidnapped in the coast province. 

A Taliban leader talking to Reuters took responsibility for the kidnapping. 

The move comes after negotiations between the U.S., the Taliban and Afghanistan stalled last year. 

The US has expressed interest in picking things back up 

President Trump ended talks last year after a US service member was killed by the Taliban in September.
